Saudade

Original-Liedtext
[Intro – portuguese guitar alone, glasses clink, the room goes quiet] [Verse 1 – Sofia] The candles burn in Alfama, the washing waves goodbye, below the roofs the river turns to silver in the sky. I came here as a stranger with a mountain in my chest, now every night I sing for you the song I love the best. [Chorus – Sofia, small choir humming] Saudade, saudade, a longing with no name, a city fell and rose again and never was the same. Saudade, saudade, I sing it till it's true: I left a lake to find the sea, and found my voice in you. [Verse 2 – Sofia] They say the earth broke open here in seventeen fifty-five, the sea came in, the churches fell, and still the town's alive. So if I fall, then let me fall like Lisbon, into song, and rise again on these old stones where all the hearts belong. [Chorus – Sofia, choir] Saudade, saudade, a longing with no name, a city fell and rose again and never was the same. [Bridge – Sofia, softer] There's a man who never claps, who sits there by the door. He doesn't listen to the song, he listens for something more. [Guitar solo – portuguese guitar, then saxophone answers] [Final Chorus – Sofia, full voice, strings] Saudade, saudade, I sing it till it's true: I left a lake to find the sea, and found my voice in you. Uma só vida, uma só voz, one life, one voice, one night, and Lisbon holds it in her hands like candles holding light. [Outro – guitar, a single chord, silence] - 02
Original-Liedtext
[Intro – a tram bell, wheels on rails, upright bass walking] [Verse 1 – Sofia] The last tram climbs the hill at night, the yellow light, the narrow street, a gentleman sits down beside me and smiles like we were meant to meet. [Verse 2 – The Stranger] I heard you sing, I heard you soar, a voice like that should never end. Just give me hours, give me nights, and let a little machine pretend. [Pre-Chorus – Stranger] No more tours, no more tears, no more singing through the years, we keep your voice in silver code, it never tires, it never gets old. [Chorus – Duet] Eléctrico, eléctrico, the city's falling down below, he offers gold, he offers time, he offers all I'll never know. Eléctrico, eléctrico, the bell rings out across the bay, a minha voz não está à venda – my voice is not for sale today. [Verse 3 – Sofia] You want a song without a heart, a breath that doesn't need the air, a girl who never says goodnight, a voice that's always, always there. [Verse 4 – Stranger, darker] Then think it over, think it twice, the night is long, the hill is steep, some voices sing forever, dear, and some just fall asleep. [Instrumental – tram rhythm, saxophone and strings building] [Chorus – Duet] Eléctrico, eléctrico, the last stop shining in the rain, she steps out laughing into night and no one sees her face again. Eléctrico, eléctrico, the empty tram rolls down the line, a minha voz não está à venda, my voice, my voice is mine. [Outro – tram bell fades, footsteps, silence] - 03
Echo
„Is schon still uman See.“ Sie lebt.
Original-Liedtext
[Intro – a phone notification sound, then a perfect, cold synth melody] [Verse 1 – Mother] A kitchen in Carinthia, the radio is on, they're playing you in every land, and you've been three weeks gone. [Verse 2 – The cold voice] Every note in perfect place, every breath precisely made, ten million hearts are listening to a voice that's not afraid. [Pre-Chorus – Mother] But I know how you hold a word, I know where you would break, and this voice never breaks at all, it's a stranger in your shape. [Chorus – Mother, strings rise] Echo, echo, singing in the night, your voice is everywhere but you are out of sight. Echo, echo, tell me where you are, a song without a heartbeat is a sky without a star. [Verse 3 – Kramer, half spoken] A mother calls at midnight, says the song is lying, sir. I've heard a thousand stories, but I've never heard one quite like her. [Bridge – the real voice, faint, fragile, under the music] Is schon still uman See … Is schon still uman See … [Breakdown – Mother, almost whispering] That's you. That's you. No machine would know that song, I sang it when you were three, you're singing it to me. [Instrumental – portuguese guitar fights through the synths, saxophone] [Final Chorus – Mother, choir, full orchestra] Echo, echo, now I hear you call, behind a thousand perfect songs, one voice behind the wall. Echo, echo, hold on, my child, halt aus, mein Kind, we're coming through the night. [Outro – the cold synth melody stops; only the faint real voice remains, then silence] - 04
Original-Liedtext
[Intro – champagne glasses, a heartbeat bass, bandoneon] [Verse 1 – The Patron] Welcome to the rooftop, friends, the city at our feet, the river red with bridges, and the future tastes so sweet. I buy the songs, I buy the streets, I buy the old façades, the people of the Alfama can sing for other gods. [Chorus – Patron and party choir] Ouro e ruído, gold and noise, a million plays from empty rooms, a million fake applause. Ouro e ruído, the money's clean by dawn, the song keeps playing on and on when the singer's gone. [Verse 2 – The Patron] A thousand phones in a basement are listening all night long, they never sleep, they never cry, they only play the song. And every stream is a little coin that washes something clean. This is the music business now, the sweetest machine. [Bridge – Sofia's real voice, from far away] Uma só vida, uma só voz, you cannot buy the breath in me, you cannot buy the sea. [Verse 3 – The Patron, darker] She will sing. They always do. Or she will sing no more. A voice is just a memory of the girl it was before. [Instrumental – tango breakdown, saxophone duel with bandoneon] [Final Chorus – Patron and choir, louder, colder] Ouro e ruído, gold and noise, a million plays from empty rooms, a million fake applause. Ouro e ruído, the river keeps the score, the song keeps playing on and on … [Outro – the music cuts out; a single real voice hums the fado melody in the silence] - 05
Saudade
Episches filmisches Finale: Fado trifft orchestrale Powerballade. Portugiesische Gitarre, Klavier, volle Streicher, Tenorsaxofon und Chor; Sopran-Bariton-Duett, Tonartwechsel, 74 BPM.
Stimmen: Großes Duett: Sofia (Sopran, live und frei) und Kramer (warmer Bariton); die Mutter im Finale; voller Chor, Orchester und Saxofon
Original-Liedtext
[Intro – portuguese guitar and piano, the sound of the Atlantic] [Verse 1 – Sofia] They gave me a microphone and walls, they told me: sing, or else, a thousand nights I sang for them and lost track of myself. But somewhere in a kitchen far away a woman knew my sound, and every song they stole from me became a road they found. [Verse 2 – Kramer] We followed one old mountain song across a thousand miles, through Alfama's crooked stairs, through lies and golden smiles. A voice is not a thing you own, it's not a thing you keep, it's someone's child, it's someone's life, it's someone's love, asleep. [Chorus – Duet, strings rise] Saudade, saudade, the night is almost through, the machines can sing forever, but they'll never sing like you. Saudade, saudade, here at the end of land, uma só vida, one life, one voice, I hold it in my hand. [Bridge – Sofia, alone, piano] The earth broke here, the city fell, the sea came in so high, and still they rose and built again beneath the same blue sky. [Saxophone Solo – over strings and choir, building] [Bridge 2 – Mother] Is schon still uman See … now come home, come home to me. [Key Change] [Final Chorus – Sofia, Kramer, choir, full orchestra] Saudade, saudade, the sun is rising new, the machines can sing forever, but they'll never sing like you! Saudade, saudade, here where the oceans start, uma só vida, one life, one voice, one living, beating heart! [Outro – portuguese guitar alone, waves, one last sung word] Saudade.
Geschichte & Klangwelt
